Oh, Chintsa… Pretty little seaside village of my dreams. We came, we saw, we napped, and wandered on the beach. All in the name of birthday.
My Andre whisked me away on a surprise birthday adventure this past weekend to the quaint little seaside village of Chintsa, located in the Wild Coast region of the Eastern Cape. This province never ceases to amaze me for its beauty and mix of coast meets country. I find it surreal to be surrounded by mountains, kudus, cacti and aloe one minute, and to be driving along spectacular shores the next. Magical Eastern Cape. This particular trip was especially magical since it was my birthday and, after 4,5 years of dating, our first time at the beach as a couple! Kan jy dit glo.
I do love the beach in winter. In fact, I prefer it. I’m not a big fan of frolicking in the ocean (growing up in Cape Town with it’s freezing ocean will take care of that!) and being born a redhead, I have a very fair complexion and sensitive skin so tanning is not exactly a favourite pastime of mine. Having said that, nothing beats walking barefoot on the beach and words can’t explain the level of excitement I feel the second the waves hit my feet. A secluded beach in winter is one of my all-time favourite places to be.
So let me tell you about Chintsa (formerly ‘Cintsa’). The little village is home to less than 2000 people and is popular among fishermen, backpackers and people looking for a VERY quiet weekend getaway. Picture unspoilt white sandy beaches backed by forested dunes, inhabited from time to time by people on horseback, locals walking their dogs, and couples strolling hand in hand. Dreamy.
A quick search on Tripadvisor won’t offer up much for Chintsa in fact, the ‘To Do’ section is blank, which was a welcome change from our usual lets-do-everything-in-one-day road trips. Our options were 1) eating, 2) sleeping, 3) reading, or 4) walking along the beach. And that’s exactly what we did.
On the eve of my birthday I fell asleep to the sound of the ocean, and I started my new year with a sunrise stroll on the beach – a beautiful start to what I’m hoping will be a beautiful year.
Happy birthday to all of you born in the month of June!
